Dear Torrey Pines Lacrosse Friends and Family,

It is with great sadness and disappointment that I write this letter to all of you, officially relaying the formal end of the CIF spring sports seasons. We all use the metaphor that you’ve got to practice or play like its the last day you’re going to play, and damn it if this wasn’t true. What happens on the field, you can deal with. It’s binary. Its numerical. However, it’s the surprising nature of this and the lack of control that makes this so much worse.

Today was the sound of silence for me and for our beloved Seniors. Some of these 2020 boys I have coached since the third grade, others at TP and all off-season w RC/WCS/ etc. year round for 4 plus years and in no scenario ever, did any of us envision this would be our story book ending. My heart absolutely aches for the entire team, but mostly our Seniors. Missing out on all of the opportunities that being a senior in this program affords you and not being able to achieve goals that they have put so much sweat equity into achieving is debilitating to me at best; LCC got off easy this spring to be blunt! The leaderhip of our Seniors secured the foundation for the future, pointed the way forward and were exemplars of character and commitment in their time.

For the underclassmen, Torrey Pines Lacrosse will be back, and our team room will once again be filled with dedicated souls who believe in where we are going and what we are doing. Kathy and I hope to have a “Senior Night” of some kind and a team wrap up banquet and awards night once the, “Stay at Home” ban is lifted, whenever that is.

We will be in touch on all of this, along with equipment return and field cleanup etc. when we know more. In the meantime, we can all grieve together, and support one another as we move forward through these uncertain times.

– Jono
