For the third consecutive year and the sixth time in the last 13 years, No. 1 Torrey Pines and No. 3 La Costa Canyon faced off for the CIF-San Diego Section Open Division boys lacrosse championship Friday at Patrick Henry High School.

Torrey Pines got four goals each from brothers Harry and Ross Jacobsen to fuel the Falcons to a 15-4 victory and the program’s eighth consecutive Open Division crown.

“I wouldn’t be able to score these goals if the guys weren’t clearing me the ball,” said junior Harry Jacobsen, who will join his brother Ross at Dartmouth in a couple of years. “Credit to all of them, my brother always has his head up looking for me, and same with all the other guys on the team. I can’t get my shots unless they do their job, so it’s really a reflection of all the hard work they put in.”

After Torrey Pines (15-3) and La Costa Canyon (12-7) were tied at one early, the Falcons responded with two goals in seven seconds, including the first from Harry Jacobsen with 9:06 left in the opening quarter.

The Falcons scored those two goals as part of a 7-0 run before Mavericks senior Jackson Maggiore scored as time expired going into halftime.

During the Falcons’ run, Harry Jacobsen scored two goals in 19 seconds before his brother found the back of the net twice in 25 seconds.

Overall, Torrey Pines recorded 15 goals and five assists, including two from Greyson Rossettie, who netted three points with a goal.

“We were in full attack,” Falcons coach Jono Zissi said. “Our offense was firing, we were well spaced, we moved the ball, we had assisted goals, and our defense did their job.”

A critical part to the offense rolling was the defense being able to win loose balls. Whitten Huang won 19 of 23 faceoffs and also recorded an assist.

“As a sophomore, that’s an insane staff for someone who didn’t expect to play at all this year and was really stepped up to a huge role with his older brother (Foster) tearing his ACL,” said senior Max Wenger, who won four ground balls and will also join Ross Jacobsen at Dartmouth next fall. “In a league in San Diego, where underclassmen don’t play a bunch, he really stepped up as a sophomore and solidified himself as one of the best FOGOS on the West Coast.”

In addition to Maggiore’s goal, the Mavericks evened the match on a goal from Jackson Slaughter. La Costa Canyon also got goals from junior Heath Golden and freshman Connor Lenz.

“They’re a great team, they are well coached, they have an elite offense,” Zissi said. “They can hurt you from a number of different places.”
